Below is an example of the Child Art Therapy Training Workshop goals and agenda.

Workshop Goals:

  • Introduction to the field of art therapy.
  • Outline the history of art therapy highlighting key contributors to the field.
  • Explain the underlying principles of art therapy.
  • Outline the components an art therapy course of treatment.
  • Experience art materials through art therapeutic processes.
  • Experience non-directive and directive evaluation and treatment approaches.
  • Illustrate art therapy principles and practice by reviewing six case studies of clients and their art therapeutic course of treatment.
  • Demonstrate the use of metaphor and healing stories in art therapy.
  • Present art therapeutic interventions to improve the client's self-esteem, increase insight, decrease trauma and acting-out behaviors.
  • Review forensic art therapy evaluation techniques for suspected child sexual abuse.
  • Review the importance of object relations, art making and expression.
  • Understand issues involving the interpretation of children's art.

Workshop Agenda

Workshops are limited to a maximum of 20 participants.

Day One:
Child Art Therapy Principles & Evaluations

Registration check-in: 8:45 - 9:00 AM

Workshop Time: 9:00-12:00 & 1:00 to 5:00

Morning & afternoon refreshments (10:30AM and 3:00PM) are provided for you.
Lunch is available through nearby restaurants or in  cafes.


Art materials including paper, drawing and painting supplies and stoneware clay are included in the workshop fee.


The first day begins by covering a brief history of Art Therapy and an overview of key contributors to the field. ( S. Freud, A. Freud, C. Jung, M. Naumberg, E. Kramer,E. Ulman, J.A. Rubin, V. Lowenfeld, H.X. Kwiakovska, H. Wadeson, S. McNiff, C. Malchiodi)

  • The major clinical modalities used in Art Therapy are highlighted (psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, developmental model, et al). 
  • Developmental stages of child mark-making and art creation is visually presented through power point. (Kellogg, Lowenfeld)
  • The developmental model of Art Therapy assessment will set the foundation for various therapeutic evaluation techniques. (V. Lowenfeld, R. Kellogg)
  • Non-directive (E. Ulman) Art Therapy evaluation explained. Participants will experience this process first-hand.
  • Origins of art therapy in power point and lecture.
  • Who is and is not an art therapist. The education and registration process for art therapists.
  • Directive drawing, painting and sculpture evaluations will be experienced by the participants. (Draw-a-Person-in-the-Rain Test, Kinetic Family Drawing Test, Winnicott Scribble Test) 
  • A psychodynamic analysis of art media is introduced. (Naumberg, Kramer, Wadeson)
  • Issues in decrypting and interpreting children’s visually imagery: process and product. (J.A.Rubin)

Day Two: Child Art Therapy Exercises

Workshop Time: 9:00-12:00 & 1:00 to 5:00

Day Two is heavily experiential and designed to build upon the principles of art therapy covered in Day One.  Specific art therapeutic exercises will be experienced by the participants for the treatment of:

  • childhood depression/suicidal ideation
  • abused and neglected children
  • children of divorce/custody battles
  • children of dysfunctional families
  • medically stressed children
  • children of alcoholics/addicts
  • ADHD children
  • sexually abused children
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in children
  • children with learning & developmental disabilities
  • child victims of ritual abuse 
  • Case studies of child clients and power point presentations of client artworks are reviewed. Course of treatment reviewed.
  • Forensic interviewing techniques: how to question and speak to children about traumatic events reflected in their artworks.
  • We will identify effective metaphors and healing stories and how to present these methods in an art therapeutic manner.
  • How art therapists avoid re-traumatizing the child client through the use of transitional objects. Participants will create a transitional object in stoneware clay.
  • The psychological impact of creating therapeutic art in clay, charcoal, pastels and paint will be experienced by the participants. Feelings Maps will be created and analyzed.
  • Using Art Therapy in a school setting: tips for teachers and counselors in working with art therapists. How to structure Art Therapy sessions to comply with the school day. Creating an after-school Art Therapy program.
  • Structuring Art Therapy sessions for individuals and groups.
  • Question and Answer period.
  • Evaluation of the Child Art Therapy Training Workshop, forms passed out/turned back in.
  • Wrap-Up, Thanks and Goodbyes.

After completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Define art therapy and the educational steps toward becoming an art therapist.
  2. Explain the basic principles and purposes of Art Therapy.
  3. Explain the history of art therapy in the context of the psychoanalytic tradition.
  4. Understand how art therapy is used with emotional, behavioral, developmental and neurological disorders in children.
  5. Understand how art therapy evaluates the developmental capabilities of the child.
  6. Identify art therapy assessment approaches (Non-directive and Directive).
  7. Explain the creation and use of transitional objects in art therapy.
  8. Identify ways to use art materials in an art therapeutic manner.
  9. Explain how to use metaphors and healing stories art therapeutically.
  10. Know how art therapists create and use art therapeutic prompts.
  11. Identify different ways art therapists structure art therapy sessions.
  12. Identify appropriate art therapeutic interventions for various diagnoses.
  13. Identify ways that art therapy can be used in school, hospital and clinical settings.
  14. Demonstrate various art therapy techniques used by art therapists for individual and group sessions.
